NALC signs open letter urging primary prevention of men's violence against women and girls
We have today added our voice to the growing call for urgent action to address men's violence against women and girls. In a powerful statement of solidarity, we joined the White Ribbon UK campaign in signing an open letter to prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, urging the government to prioritise the primary prevention of violence against women and girls (VAWG).
The open letter outlines the need for a shift in focus from reactionary measures to proactive strategies aimed at preventing violence before it occurs. It highlights the importance of early intervention and education, especially in challenging the societal attitudes that foster abusive behaviour and gender inequality.
The letter, signed by over 60 organisations, calls for a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that includes a national public education campaign to challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours that contribute to violence, funding for primary prevention programmes that work with young men and boys to prevent violent behaviour before it begins, support for community-based initiatives that promote healthy relationships, equality, and respect, and improved statutory responsibilities for local councils to integrate violence prevention into their work, ensuring a coordinated and consistent response.
Our support for this initiative underscores the crucial role that parish and town councils play in creating lasting change and tackling the systemic issues that underpin violence against women and girls. We believe grassroots action is crucial in addressing the root causes of gender-based violence. We are committed to promoting safer, more inclusive communities and ensuring parish and town councils are equipped with the tools and resources needed to drive real change locally.
We are proud to join White Ribbon UK and many other organisations in calling for the primary prevention of men's violence against women and girls. Parish and town councils play a pivotal role in shaping the environments in which our communities live and work. Empowering councils with the necessary resources and authority can help build a culture of respect, safety, and equality.
