NALC chair meets new LGA chair to discuss key issues facing local councils

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) chair, Cllr Keith Stevens, had a productive introductory meeting with Cllr Louise Gittens, the newly appointed chair of the Local Government Association (LGA).

During the meeting, Cllr Stevens and Cllr Gittens discussed several pressing issues of mutual interest. Cllr Gittens expressed strong support for local (parish and town) councils and emphasised her commitment to advocating for their concerns at the national level.

The two leaders agreed to collaborate on key areas, including sanctions for poor behaviour within councils, the expansion of remote meeting capabilities, and the need for government grants to support local councils. They also addressed the ongoing challenges surrounding local government finance, particularly considering the current financial crisis affecting many local authorities.

Additionally, Cllr Stevens and Cllr Gittens agreed to explore the possibility of updating the LGA’s 2021 guide on local service delivery and place-shaping. This guide plays a crucial role in fostering better cooperation between different tiers of local government, especially in the context of devolution efforts.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to regular communication and collaboration.
