Portland and Weymouth win joint culture bid for 2025

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) congratulate Portland and Weymouth on being named Dorset's joint towns of culture for 2025.

This prestigious recognition, facilitated by the Arts Development Company, is a significant step towards fostering cultural engagement and strengthening community ties across Dorset.

The Dorset Towns of Culture initiative is designed to provide towns, villages, and hamlets throughout the county with the opportunity to lead a year of cultural activities. The programme aims to deepen relationships between local communities, cultural venues, and organisations and promote artistic and cultural expression.

As joint winners, Portland and Weymouth will each receive a substantial grant of £30,000 from Dorset Council. This funding will be further bolstered by matching contributions from Portland Town Council and Weymouth Town Council, providing significant financial support for a diverse program of cultural activities throughout 2025.

The selection of Portland and Weymouth highlights the unique cultural contributions of these coastal towns. With their combined efforts, the communities are poised to deliver an exciting and engaging year of cultural programming to celebrate the area's diversity and vibrancy.

Local leaders, cultural organisations, and residents are already gearing up to take advantage of this opportunity, planning a year full of events to enhance the region's cultural landscape and strengthen community bonds.

The announcement follows Bridport's successful tenure as the current holder of the Dorset Town of Culture title. Throughout 2024, Bridport has hosted various performances and visual arts events, showcasing the town's rich cultural heritage and creativity. Bridport Town Council was crowned NALC's Star Council Awards Council of the Year 2022.
