Author: Daisy Petrow, communications officer, the National Association of Local Councils

Now’s the time to start your White Ribbon Day plans! The theme for this year’s White Ribbon Day has been revealed: ‘It starts with men’.

Allyship is at the heart of White Ribbons prevention work to end violence against women and girls, so this year’s theme is vital to stress the role men can play to eradicate gender-based violence from our society once and for all. White Ribbon Day takes place on 25 November every year, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

White Ribbon is a global movement dedicated to ending male violence against women and promoting gender equality.

What can local (parish and town) councils, organisations, and individuals do to celebrate the day? Read on to find out.

Leverage social media.

Share social media posts with impactful stories, statistics, and information on how individuals and groups can participate in White Ribbon Day activities. Showing your support is vital.

Collaborate with local organisations.

Partner with local non-profits, shelters, and support groups to co-host events and provide resources. Collaborative efforts can amplify the message and reach more people.

Wear a White Ribbon

Show your commitment to ending violence against women and encourage others to do the same. Wearing a white ribbon can trigger crucial conversations.

Education and advocacy

Educate yourself and others about the signs of harassment, domestic violence, and the signs of violence against women and girls. Speak out against sexism in your community and advocate for policies that protect and support victims.

Change starts with us, specifically men. What will you do this White Ribbon Day to make a lasting difference?

By taking these steps, local councils, organisations, and individuals can make a significant impact in raising awareness and promoting the message of White Ribbon Day, working towards a world free from violence against women. Now’s the time to start your White Ribbon Day plans!
