Parish and town councils possess vehicles for transporting residents via minibuses or council use in tasks like tree management. A minor yet impactful step councils can take to address climate change locally is transitioning their vehicles to electric models and encouraging other environmentally friendly transportation options.

Parish and town councils can significantly promote sustainable travel and transport options within their communities. Here are several actions they can take:

  • Public transport advocacy — Advocate for improved public transportation services, including increased frequency, expanded routes, and accessibility enhancements to encourage residents to use public transit instead of private vehicles.
  • Active transportation infrastructure — Invest in infrastructure for walking and cycling, such as sidewalks, bike lanes, and safe crossings, to make it easier and safer for residents to choose active modes of transportation.
  • Promotion of walking and cycling — Organise walking and cycling events, provide maps of local walking and cycling routes and offer incentives such as bike repair stations or bike-sharing programs to encourage residents to walk and cycle more frequently.
  • Car-sharing and ride-sharing programs: Facilitate the establishment of car-sharing or ride-sharing programs within the community to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and promote more efficient use of existing transportation resources.
