Green recovery
We believe that through the collective efforts of 10,000 parish and town councils, we can address climate change locally and cultivate more environmentally friendly communities. We take pride in the growing number of councils declaring a climate emergency and endeavour to inspire others to follow suit. Parish and town councils can take grassroots action when larger authorities may be slower to respond. The impact of the coronavirus has varied widely across communities, necessitating unique approaches to recovery. Climate change mitigation must be prioritised in any recovery plan. Local councillors play a vital role in leading their communities through this process.
Parish and town councils can play a crucial role in promoting a green recovery by taking various actions at the local level. Here are some initiatives they can consider:
- Promote sustainable practices — Encourage the parish to adopt sustainable practices, such as energy efficiency measures, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable transportation options.
- Renewable energy projects — Explore opportunities to implement renewable energy projects, such as solar panels on community buildings or wind turbines in suitable locations, to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy.
- Green spaces and biodiversity — Invest in creating and maintaining green spaces, parks, and wildlife habitats within the parish. Planting trees, creating community gardens, and preserving natural habitats can enhance biodiversity and contribute to carbon sequestration.
- Support local businesses — Promote and support businesses prioritising sustainability and environmental responsibility. Encourage using eco-friendly practices and products, such as reusable or biodegradable packaging.
- Resilience planning — Develop resilience plans that address the impacts of climate change, such as flooding, extreme weather events, and heat waves. Identify vulnerable areas within the parish and implement measures to enhance resilience and adaptation.
- Collaboration and partnerships — Collaborate with neighbouring parishes, local authorities, environmental organisations, and businesses to leverage resources and expertise in implementing green initiatives. Joint projects and partnerships can amplify impact and facilitate knowledge-sharing.
