Mental health

As highlighted by the mental health charity Mind, each year, one in four individuals will grapple with a mental health issue. At the same time, one in ten children will be affected by mental illness. The impact of mental health problems extends beyond individual struggles. It reverberates throughout our communities.

According to NHS England, fostering enhanced mental health and wellbeing yields positive outcomes across diverse demographics. These outcomes encompass:

  • Better educational achievement
  • Higher levels of social interaction and participation
  • Improved employment rates and productivity
  • Improved physical health and life expectancy
  • Increased skills
  • Reduced health risk behaviours such as smoking and alcohol misuse
  • Reduced risk of mental health problems and suicide
  • Reduced anti-social behaviour and criminality

Supporting residents with mental health issues is a crucial responsibility for parish and town councils. Councils can implement various measures to support and cultivate a nurturing community, such as:

  • Compile and distribute a list of local mental health resources, including helplines, counselling services, and support groups. Ensure residents know where to turn for assistance when facing mental health challenges.
  • Facilitate or support the creation of local mental health support groups where residents can share their experiences, offer mutual support, and access resources. It provides a sense of community and understanding.
  • Organise awareness campaigns to destigmatise mental health issues. Distribute information through local newsletters, social media, and community events to educate residents about mental health, available resources, and where to seek help.
  • Work with local emergency services and healthcare providers to develop crisis intervention plans that address mental health emergencies. Ensure that emergency responders are trained to handle situations involving individuals with mental health issues.
  • Develop and support programs aimed at promoting positive mental health among young people. It can include educational initiatives in schools, mentorship programs, and activities that foster resilience and coping skills.
  • Collaborate with mental health professionals to offer affordable or subsidised counselling and therapy services within the community. It can be particularly beneficial for those facing barriers to accessing such services.
  • Create safe spaces within the community where residents can engage in activities that promote mental wellbeing. It could include community gardens, art spaces, or recreational areas.
  • Consider how to support mental health in the workplace. Work holds substantial importance in many lives, serving as a significant component where we dedicate considerable time, earn our income, and often form meaningful connections.
